The FUNdamentals of Sport

The FUNdamental movement patterns for athletics

The FUNdamentals of the sport of life as listed by the ā€˜Long Term Athlete Development Protocol.ā€™

Iā€™m a big fan of this stuff, Istvan Balyi is a researcher from the University of Victoria and has done a ton of work developing and implementing this plan for improving the physical culture and active lives of developed nations.

The U.S., the U.K, Australia and Canada have all started to implement the protocol slowly but surely. I expect this to be the next big trend in youth athletics and hopefully fitness.

In my own practice I’ve started making a more deliberate effort to get to this stuff after I get through foundational movements (Squat/Deadlift/Step/Lunge/Push/Pull/Rotate/Stabilize/Locomotion).

ā€œLong Term Developmentā€ for kids and adults is absolutely essential for improving our overall well-being and quality of life.

This is a list of the skills that have been determined to really advance athletic movement and skill, particularly later in life. Less emphasis in physical education should be placed on winning and more on participating.

PLEASE pass this on to anyone who coaches your kids. If you are a coach for kids athletics, please read this yourself. If you know any parents of kids, please send them this.
